If you're hunting for a brilliant cyberpunk mystery to add to your library of PC Games, Beyond a Steel Sky is a fantastic choice that perfectly blends retro nostalgia with modern design. I wanted to write this article to highlight this long-awaited sequel to the 1994 cult classic, though you absolutely do not need to play the original to jump right in. It totally ditches the old-school 2D point-and-click style for a gorgeous, 3D cel-shaded world designed by legendary comic book artist Dave Gibbons. It is a beautifully crafted, slightly goofy, and deeply engaging adventure that feels exactly like stepping into a classic sci-fi graphic novel.
Storyline
The plot puts you back in the boots of Robert Foster, who has been living peacefully in the wasteland until a terrifying machine kidnaps a young boy from his village. The rescue mission leads Robert straight back to Union City, a sprawling, supposedly utopian metropolis controlled by an all-seeing AI. The citizens are obsessed with social credit scores and mandatory happiness, but things are definitely not as perfect as they seem. You have to sneak into the city, assume a fake identity, and uncover a dark corporate conspiracy about social control, mind-altering tech, and what an AI actually thinks is best for humanity.
Gaming experience
Playing this game is a wonderfully laid-back mix of exploration, witty dialogue, and clever problem-solving. Instead of fast-paced shooting, you spend your time chatting with quirky locals, picking up clues, and figuring out how to manipulate the city's rigid rules. The real star of the show is your trusty hacking tool, which lets you literally rewrite the logic of nearby machines and droids. You can seamlessly swap blocks of code to make vending machines spit out free items or trick heavy security doors into opening for the wrong people. It is a highly satisfying, brain-teasing experience that keeps you hooked from start to finish.
