If you are getting tired of the same old predictable shooters, Skin Deep is here to throw a beautifully chaotic wrench into your library of PC games. Developed by the delightfully weird minds at Blendo Games, this title is essentially an immersive sim that doesn't take itself too seriously. Instead of just running and gunning, you have to worry about sneaking around, hiding in shadows, and literally pulling glass out of your bare feet. It is a wacky, sandbox-style adventure that proves indie PC games can still completely surprise us with fresh, off-the-wall ideas.
Storyline
The setup here is wonderfully bizarre. You play as an insurance commando—yes, you read that right—who was frozen in cryo-sleep on a massive corporate starliner. When a bunch of heavily armed space pirates suddenly hijack the ship, your bosses thaw you out to handle the mess and protect their bottom line. It is not some grand, emotional space opera; rather, it is a hilariously grim, blue-collar take on sci-fi where you are basically just an underpaid space janitor armed with a gun, trying to clean up a very messy pirate infestation.
Gaming Experience
Playing this game is a hilarious masterclass in things going horribly wrong. Unlike a lot of stealth PC games where you are a silent, perfect ninja, Skin Deep makes you beautifully vulnerable. If you step on broken glass without boots, you are going to leave a bloody trail and limp. If you stand in a dusty room, your character might sneeze and alert every pirate on the floor. You can sneak through air vents, sabotage enemy equipment, or just panic and throw a trash can at someone's head. It is a wildly reactive sandbox that constantly forces you to improvise, making every single firefight feel completely unique and incredibly funny.
