If you are a fan of classic JRPGs but want something with a unique twist, Souls of Chronos is a title you should definitely check out. At first glance, the adorable chibi art style might make you think it is a lighthearted adventure, but this indie gem hides a surprisingly dark and gritty world. It stands out among modern PC Games by blending nostalgic, old-school top-down exploration with fast-paced real-time combat. You get to navigate a morally gray universe where your choices actually matter, making it a fresh and engaging experience from start to finish.
Storyline
The game takes place fifteen years after a catastrophic event simply known as the Apocalypse. You play as Sid, a young gangster trying to survive in the crime-ridden port city of Astella. Sid is not your typical squeaky-clean hero; he is part of the Hyena gang, dealing with rival factions and trying to maintain order on the streets. Luckily, he is not alone. He is bound to Torii, a mysterious creature known as a Chronus who has the power to manipulate time. Together, they find themselves caught in the middle of a brewing gang war and a gripping murder mystery. The dynamic between a career criminal and a time-bending girl makes the narrative incredibly compelling.
Gaming experience
When it comes to gameplay, Souls of Chronos ditches traditional turn-based battles for an active hack-and-slash combat system. You will control Sid, wielding a mix of melee swords and guns, while calling on Torii to freeze time whenever things get too chaotic. It is fast, intuitive, and very satisfying to play. What makes the game even better is the deep dialogue system. The way you choose to interact with NPCs directly affects Sid and Torii's stat growth and unlocks different perks. Whether you want to be a ruthless thug or a more compassionate rogue, your decisions shape your playstyle, giving this RPG a lot of excellent replay value.
