If you've ever thought the French Revolution needed way more killer robots, then Steelrising is definitely going to be your next obsession. Made by the studio Spiders, this title takes a completely wild spin on history and turns 18th-century Paris into a beautiful but deadly steampunk nightmare. It perfectly scratches that itch for anyone looking for solid action-RPG PC games that offer a fresh, unique setting instead of the usual dark fantasy tropes. With its gorgeous environments and deeply cool clockwork aesthetic, it easily pulls you into a chaotic world where every cobblestone street is packed with danger.
Storyline
The story kicks off in an alternate version of 1789, where King Louis XVI has completely lost his mind and decided to crush the revolution using a massive, ruthless army of mechanical automatons. You play as Aegis, a highly advanced, elegant dancing robot who also happens to be the deadly personal bodyguard to Queen Marie Antoinette. The Queen sends you on a desperate mission to stop her husband's madness, find your mysterious creator, and rescue key political figures to save the country. Along the way, you actually get to meet and help out famous historical figures like Robespierre and Lafayette, making it a wildly entertaining and bizarre twist on real-world history.
gaming experience.
When you actually get your hands on the controls, the game feels like a super satisfying Soulslike, but it brings some really fun and unique mechanics to the table. The combat is fast and requires you to carefully manage your stamina; however, instead of just getting tired, Aegis physically overheats. You can choose to instantly cool her down in the middle of a fight, but doing so too often will actually freeze you solid in a block of ice. You get to play around with an awesome arsenal of weapons, from bladed fans to heavy metallic halberds. Plus, unlike other punishing PC games in this genre, it features a fantastic Assist Mode that lets you customize the difficulty, meaning you can just enjoy the awesome robot-smashing action without wanting to throw your keyboard across the room.
