If you are getting a bit tired of survival games filled with zombies, The Long Dark is the perfect palate cleanser you need to check out. Developed by Hinterland Studio, this title strips away all the supernatural nonsense and pits you against the most terrifying enemy of all: Mother Nature. When it comes to atmospheric and grounded PC games, this one constantly sits at the very top of the list. You are completely alone in the freezing Canadian wilderness, and every single choice you make can literally be the difference between freezing to death or surviving one more night. It is a breathtaking, brutal, and deeply lonely experience that will definitely keep you hooked for hours.
Storyline
The episodic narrative mode, known as Wintermute, kicks off with a massive, mysterious geomagnetic disaster that completely fries all electronics and brings planes crashing down from the sky. You play as bush pilot Will Mackenzie, who gets separated from his passenger, Dr. Astrid Greenwood, after their plane goes down in the snowy mountains of Great Bear Island. Your main objective is to track her down, but the story quickly evolves as you stumble across abandoned towns and desperate survivors who need your help. It is a fantastic, slow-burn mystery that naturally unfolds as you push through the biting cold, making you genuinely care about what happened to this broken, frozen world.
Gaming Experience
The actual gameplay loop is incredibly stressful but heavily rewarding, cementing its spot as a must-play title for fans of hardcore PC games. There are no monsters here; instead, you are constantly fighting off frostbite, starvation, and packs of incredibly aggressive wolves. You have to micromanage your calories, melt snow for drinking water, and patch up your torn clothes before the next blizzard rolls in. Playing on a mouse and keyboard feels super smooth, especially when you are desperately trying to aim a hunting rifle with frozen, shaky hands. The sandbox Survival Mode features brutal permadeath, meaning if you make one stupid mistake and fade into the long dark, your save file is wiped forever.
