If you are constantly on the hunt for a first-person shooter that refuses to just hold your hand, Witchfire is about to become your newest obsession. Created by the mastermind indie studio The Astronauts, this dark fantasy roguelite shooter feels like a heavy metal album cover brought to life. It completely ditches the tired, modern military tropes for something much more gothic, grim, and intense. For anyone looking to spice up their library of PC games, this title delivers a ridiculously satisfying blend of old-school arena gunplay and punishing modern mechanics that will keep you glued to your monitor for hours.
Storyline
The setup drops you into an incredibly dark, alternate-reality version of the medieval ages where the Church is fighting a desperate, losing war against terrifying witches. You step into the boots of a "Preyer," an immortal, sinful assassin armed to the teeth with forbidden pagan magic and heavy firearms. Your whole mission is to venture into hostile, fog-drenched territories, hunt down the infamous Witch of the Black Sea, and retrieve a powerful artifact that could turn the tide of the war. It is moody and atmospheric, and it doesn't drown you in endless cutscenes, letting the eerie environments do the heavy lifting.
Gaming Experience
Actually playing Witchfire is an absolute adrenaline rush. The core loop combines lightning-fast movement with elemental magic spells and some of the crunchiest gun mechanics you will ever experience. Since it leans heavily into the roguelite genre, every time you die, you lose your unbanked resources, making every single expedition feel like a high-stakes gamble. You have to constantly decide whether to push your luck and clear just one more camp of demonic minions or play it safe and retreat to your hub to upgrade your stats. It is brutal, incredibly fast-paced, and wildly rewarding when you finally nail a perfect run.
